Dixieland, early jazz styles, ragtime and old-time gospel music

Black Swan is an entertaining, artistic group that loves performing hot jazz, ragtime and old-time gospel with a distinctive, original flair.

Frequently booked at jazz and dance festivals, concerts, weddings, anniversaries, parties, wakes, corporate celebrations, cruises, Mardi Gras... you name it...Black Swan is ready to make your special occasion an "affair to remember". We can entertain either as a full, eight-piece ensemble, featuring the sizzling talents of vocalist Marilyn Keller, or a smaller jazz combo to fit any occasion.

Hoagy CD is Close! After a bit of a recording hiatus, Black Swan spent time in the studio this summer recording a collection of Hoagy Carmichael's earlier compositions. Stay tuned for the release, expected in early September.

Mark your calendars! Check out details about public events on the Black Swan Performance Schedule, or contact us directly for private bookings. Our next public performance is September 9-11 at the wonderful Pentastic Jazz Festival in Penticton, British Columbia, with future festivals in Sun Valley and Seaside as well. And for your listening, dancing, sightseeing, eating and cavorting pleasure...Black Swan with Marilyn Keller is crusing the Alaska's Inside Passage June 16-23, 2017 with Sally McKay's group of revelers, including Ivory&Gold® featuring Jeff & Anne Barnhardt, jazz entertainer Yve Evans, Australian jazz trombone and vocalist Paul Ingle, and Don Rice on saxophone.

John and Don are in the news! On March 17, the Portland Tribune featured Black Swan's piano player extraordinaire John Bennett in an article named Still Keeping the Audience Swinging which recognizes the fundraising work John and others do each month at the Shriner's in Wilsonville. Two days later our celebrated Montana slide man Don Stone was highlighted in Your Time for his upcoming jazz work with a relative major and minor.

Dance Hall Favorites, our latest release, is a two-CD collection recorded at Performing Arts Centers throughout Oregon, California and Washington. It includes over two hours of hot jazz and audience favorites on 28 tracks.

Hot Notes is an occasional blog by band leader Kit Johnson. The latest edition, Dancers, Front & Center! speaks to the need for small festivals to win the hearts and minds of this key constituency. The inaugural publication, Positioning the Traditional Jazz Spotlight discussed building festival attendance and enthusiasm.
